چکیده

The paper is concerned with a micromechanical formulation of force transmission within an unsaturated soil as a three-phase system composed of idealized spherical particles connected by a pore water menisci network. It is proposed here a tensorial effective stress equation that can be viewed as a generalized Bishop’s equation in which the elusive effective stress parameter χ is elucidated. The latter can be expressed as an explicit function of the number of water menisci, particle packing and degree of water saturation. Also, interparticle forces are found to be dependent on the distribution of pore fluid pressure and the contractile skin arising from the interaction of interfaces. Two major findings of this work are: (1) the determination of the analytical relationship between χ and degree of saturation, and (2) the identification of a suction based internal shear effect even under isotropic external loading. The understanding of suction stress and its dependency on the degree of saturation is a longstanding problem both theoretically and experimentally. Three-dimensional elasticity solution for vibrational analysis of thick continuously graded sandwich plates with different boundary conditions using a two-parameter micromechanical model for agglomeration

An equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach was employed to estimate the effective constitutive law for an elastic isotropic medium (i.e., the matrix) with oriented straight carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The two-dimensional generalized differential quadrature method was an efficient and accurate numerical tool for discretizing equations of motion and for implementing vari...

Non-Coaxial Theories of Plasticity for Granular Materials

This Keynote Paper is concerned with the fundamental mechanics of granular materials with a particular reference to non-coaxial behaviour. The non-coaxial behaviour refers to the non-coincidence of principal stress directions and corresponding principal plastic strain rate directions during plastic deformation. At present, the majority of soil models used in geotechnical practice are those of a...

Electro-Thermo-Mechanical Response of Thick-Walled Piezoelectric Cylinder Reinforced by BNNTs

Electro-thermo-elastic stress analysis of piezoelectric polymeric thick-walled cylinder reinforced by boronnitride nanotubes (BNNTs) subjected to electro-thermo-mechanical fields is presented in this article. The electro-thermo-elastic properties of piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PEFRC) was studied by a modified XY micromechanical model capable of exhibiting full coupling relati...

The incremental response of soils. An investigation using a discrete-element model

The incremental stress-strain relation of dense packings of polygons is investigated by using moleculardynamics simulations. The comparison of the simulation results to the continuous theories is performed using explicit expressions for the averaged stress and strain over a representative volume element. The discussion of the incremental response raises two important questions of soil deformati...

Numerical simulation of granular materials behaviour for unbound base layers used in Algerian pavement structures

Structural analysis of flexible pavements has been and still is currently performed using a multi-layer elastic theory. However, for thinly surfaced pavements subjected to light to medium volumes of traffic, the importance of non-linear stress-strain behaviour of unbound granular materials (UGM’s) requires the use of more sophisticated numerical models for structural design and analysis of such...
